Can Sugar Gliders Eat Zucchini? What About the Seeds and Skin?

Fluffy, cuddly and incredibly cute, sugar gliders are easy to fall in love with.  Being so adorable make us want to spoil our sugar gliders.  If you’re a fan of zucchini you’ve likely considered sharing it with your wide-eyed pals.

Sadly, not all food that is healthy for us is healthy for our suggies.  So, before you share your favorite foods, always make sure the treat you are giving your sugar gliders is something that isn’t unhealthy.

So, what about zucchini?  Can sugar gliders eat zucchini?  The quick and easy answer is: Yes, sugar gliders can eat zucchini and including the skin and seeds moderation.  However, you should always wash the skin if you want to feed it to your suggies.

Why Should Sugar Gliders Have Zucchini in Moderation?

As omnivores, sugar gliders have a varied diet in the wild.  This includes eating an array of insects, vegetables and fruits.  While zucchini does have nutritional value such as protein and calcium, no single food can give sugar gliders all the nutrients they need.

With most treats, it is better to rotate through a variety during the week or every few days.  This will help replicate their natural diet better.

Because zucchini does not have everything a sugar glider needs for a full and balanced diet, it is best not to overindulge them with zucchini.  They need to still be hungry enough to eat their regular meal.

Remember to always be aware of the calcium to phosphorus ratio of your sugar gliders overall diet.  Also remember that when it comes to produce fresh is best.  While frozen can be acceptable, never feed your sugar glider canned produce.

For some sugar gliders, feeding in moderation won’t be a problem, because they simply won’t like the taste of zucchini.  If that is the case with your sugar glider, don’t worry.  Not every sugar glider loves zucchini and in fact, some will not eat it at all.

Some sugar glider owners have found that lightly cooking zucchini makes it tastier for their pets.  If you decide to try this out for your suggies, be sure not to doctor up the zucchini with any flavor enhancers we use on our foods.  Added salt, and most other spices shouldn’t be part of your furry friend’s diet.

Can Sugar Gliders Eat Zucchini Skin and Seeds?

Though, as a general rule, you don’t want to feed your furry pal’s seeds, sugar gliders seem to do just fine with zucchini seeds.  The skin of zucchini on the other hand can be very bad for sugar gliders if not washed.

Sugar gliders are much more prone to getting sick from pesticides and insecticides used in modern farming than humans.  For that reason, if you wish to feed the skin to your sugar gliders be sure to thoroughly wash the skin.  Or, if you can, peel the skin before giving a slice of zucchini to your suggies.  Even better, buy organic zucchinis for your sugar gliders and don’t fret accidentally feeding them pesticides.

You should be feeding fresh and frozen produce to your sugar gliders.  With few exceptions, canned produce is not healthy for them.  Buying frozen zucchini has the benefit of allowing you to skip the worry of contaminated skin too.
